Welcome to our latest Siteturner round-up article. This time we’ve decided to seek out the best pet themes and animal related themes of 2017 for the WordPress platform.
This list will grow as time goes on, as we discover more themes designed with the pet niche in mind.
Most of the selections on this list, while animal related, also have their own unique purpose. There’s themes for vet clinics, themes for animal rescues, breeders, and even a theme for starting a pet-sitting website. If you have it mind to start a pet blog, several of these themes will be overkill. For a simple pet blog, if you’re just starting off, a free theme from WordPress.org would probably do the trick.
As always, we’ve selected the themes by hand based on overall design aesthetic and the included features. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, you can find more pet & animal themes on the TemplateMonster marketplace.
Finally, Bluehost is the best webhost, if you’re looking for a hosting solution for your animal/pet related website
PetPress is a strong contender for the title of best WordPress pet store theme. The lovely, modern design minimizes bloat and eliminates extraneous gimmicks in favor of providing an above-average user experience. The result is a theme that’s fast, responsive, and a pleasure to navigate, browse and just generally use.
The theme is fully responsive, and it maintains is sharp, usable design perfectly across the range of mobile devices. Some nice extras come bundled free, including the ubiquitous Visual Composer (for page building) and ever-popular Revolution Slider. The Booked plugin (worth $22 separately) is included for appointment booking and management.
Of course, PetPress comes with total support for WooCommerce. The developers have also added in support Contact Form 7 and Gravity Forms. Colors, fonts, and more are easily styled on the back-end. A PSD is included in case you need to take customization even further. Highly recommended for pet stores and other pet-related commercial services.More Info/Download
Another recent addition to the line-up of pets & animal themes for WordPress is Pets Club. In an effort to cover their bases, the developer designed this one with the needs of both veterinary practices and pet stores in mind (and it also works pretty well for other animal-oriented services – dog trainers, shelters – you know, stuff like that).
Everything you’d expect from a modern WordPress theme is here. It’s fully responsive, scaling nicely across the range of mobile devices, and it’s retina-ready for high-resolution displays (like the new 5k iMac, MacBook Pro, or iPad). Several handy premium plugins are bundled free, including the very popular Visual Composer, Revolution Slider and Essential Grid. The developers of those plugins must be rich by now. Well — maybe not Essential Grid.
Anyway, I’m getting off topic. E-commerce support is via WooCommerce integration, and there’s tons of excellent options on the back-end to adjust. For a full rundown of the many features this one packs in, we recommended having a quick look at the product page. Six months of support is included with the option to extend support to 12 months.
Pets Club is easy to setup, with 1-click demo installation. It’s translation-ready, compatible with WPML, and even search engine optimized to help prevent you from ending up on the last page of Google.More Info/Download
The professional, clean aesthetic of PetVet makes it ones of the best choices currently available for building a website for a veterinary practice, clinic or hospital. Six homepage variations, a powerful front-end page builder (Visual Composer) and a selection of useful back-end options are included. PetVet is a versatile option that makes code-free customization and branding easy (and a good choice for non-developers and experts alike).
Performance is optimized and speedy, and the familiar, classic layout and navigation guarantees a consistent, frustration-free user experience for your visitors and potential clients. Extra add-ons like Slider Revolution are bundled, which you can use to build a visual engaging homepage slideshow and presentation.
The theme is 100% responsive and optimized for mobile devices, and also includes support for the popular WooCommerce plugin, making PetVet a good choice for pet and animal related ecommerce ventures.More Info/Download
Happy Pets packs so many features, bells, and whistles into their theme that we can’t possibly cover them all in a short summary. The design of this WordPress pet theme is sleek and modern, tastefully combining contemporary trends and classic layouts. Plenty of white space and sensible typography focus visitor attention on the content, and Happy Pets is user-friendly for both site visitors and admins.
Frankly, this one is suitable for any sort of pet-themed business or organization you want to promote. It’s likely the most versatile pet theme on our list, and the best-bang-for-your-buck, if you’ll forgive the cliché. Remarkably, there’s even a comprehensive set of features for blogging & building a animal-oriented magazine, unlike many of the other selections on our list which tend toward specialization. Hopefully the team behind it sells a lot of them, because a lot of thought and care clearly went into it.
Tons of options, custom widgets, shortcodes, and several more odds & ends (layouts, sidebars) extend the theme even further. It’s optimized for search engines, ready for translation and supports RTL languages. Setup is fast, and six months of support are included. Cool beans.
Possibly the only draw back is the size of it. So if you’re looking for a more streamlined product, keep on readin’.More Info/Download
Another versatile theme, Pet Care comes with four excellent pet-related skins out of the box: one for grooming, one for pet hotels, one for pet hospitals and an online store for selling pet related products.
But the versatility wouldn’t matter much if the design quality wasn’t there, and fortunately the designers of Pet Care have nailed it on that front. The theme is modern, vibrant and visual engaging all the way around without sacrificing user experience.
Three popular premium plugins are bundled free, adding extra value: Visual Composer, for drag & drop page building, Revolution Slider, for building impressive homepage slideshows, and PO composer. The theme also supports WooCommerce, so you won’t have any problem setting up an online storefront, and WP Booking Calendar, for making and managing appointments.
We suggest having a look at the product’s detail page for the full range of features & functionality. Highly recommended.More Info/Download
Dawg Dog Breeder Theme
This light-weight, easy to use theme for dog breeders is a unique entry on our list: it was built especially for the new(ish) Layers plugin. Layers is free front-end website builder that brings WordPress customization one step closer to kind you’d find on popular services like SquareSpace.
The primary design is understated and minimalistic. The code base is light-weight, and Dawg scores high points for both usability and performance. There’s no bloat whatsoever, and content comes first. Your visitors won’t be annoyed by laggy animations and extraneous bells & whistles. Four different homepage presets are included, and Dawg includes support for the popular Contact Form 7 plugin and GoogleMaps.
Step-by-step instructions are included, but users who want things up and running in a hurry can take advantage of the provided XML demo content.More Info/Download

The theme is responsive and supports retina devices, and it’s WooCommerce ready so you’ll be able to sell your pet products easily and with minimal fuss.
The design if fun, colorful and vibrant in a way that’s lacking from many modern WordPress themes. Pets & Claws
Paws & Claws from ThemeFuse is another fantastic pet store/vet/animal rescue theme that eschews design trends with vibrant, colorful illustrations that give the Pets & Vets theme a run for its money.
Multiple layouts, including appointment and adoption pages, and support for Events Calendar make this a great option. Multiple sliders, mega menu, and a selection of shortcodes round out the features.

Petcare Kennels & Animal Boarding
Petcare Kennels brings you a minimal, elegant and contemporary design with a full-page hero photo. The theme is primarily targeted at dog boarding kennels and similar pet services, but could work well for other sectors of the pet industry, too.
It’s responsive and built on Twitter Bootstrap. Parallax scrolling and CSS3 transition effects make this one extra fancy, and it could be a good choice for high-end, luxury pet services.
Lots of options and a page builder give you full control over color and layout.More Info/Download
Rescue WordPress Pet Theme

Layout and color options are available on the backend, as well as several custom widgets (including maps and business hours widgets). Rescue includes a jQuery slider on the homepage and lighbox support for photos.More Info/Download
Petsitter was developed for a very specific use indeed: matching pet sitters with pets. The theme is integrated with WP Job Manager and allows users to create profiles on the front-end to advertise their pet sitting services.
Is that a lucrative field? Maybe I’ll look into it. I’m at least capable of feeding fish. Anyway, this responsive theme is built on Bootstrap and leaves a lot of room open for tweaking things on the backend – there’s unlimited colors and 600+ Google fonts to work with.
Oh yeah – there’s 40 shortcodes and Google maps integration too.More Info/Download
