Reddit is one of the most popular sites on the internet today. In fact, it often breaks the top 25 in terms of site traffic by day, so in this roundup, Siteturner will be walking through the best themes and plugins to turn your WordPress site into a Reddit clone.
These days, with all of the themes and plugins available, it’s possible to create your own site just like Reddit with just a WordPress site and a few plugins. No more need to code or even do any complicated setup. How do you do it? We’ll walk you through everything…just read on…
Before we get started, note that this article goes in depth into creating a Reddit site with WordPress themes and plugins. You may want to take a look at this article if you want to create a site like StumbleUpon or Pinterest.
In order to create a WordPress site that looks and feels like Reddit, there are a few things you’ll have to do. First, you will need to pick a Reddit-like theme. In the following section, we will take a look at all of the best Reddit WordPress themes.
Once you have done that, you will want to install a few plugins and perform a bit of configuration on your site in order to get everything to work smoothly and actually feel like the real Reddit. We will walk you through that later in this article.
Before getting started, make sure that you have a working WordPress installation.
The Best Reddit WordPress Themes
UpVote (Reddit-like WordPress Theme)
UpVote is a theme and plugin available via Themeforest. It offers the basic Reddit features: up and down voting, submission of URLs, and automatic loading of website information for posted URLs.
It also adds in connectivity to Facebook and Twitter, so that your users can log in via those social channels, and not have to register separately on your site. There are trending posts, recommendations, and more.
There are a lot of great things about UpVote. We found that the theme (and it’s accompanying plugin) are easy to install and use, and they’re not overly bloated, which is good considering WordPress can be quite a load on servers.
The other thing we loved about UpVote was the cost — at only $49 it’s an excellent deal, and significantly cheaper than competing options. And don’t worry about mobile, as the theme looks and feels great on mobile devices as well.
Although we didn’t use support, many posters said that the support for UpVote is fantastic and helpful.
What’s not so good
What we didn’t love about UpVote is the built in look. It’s a bit more complicated than Reddit, so it feels different. The upside, however, is that nobody will accuse you of looking too much like Reddit.
You can modify the look as you choose, but that’s some additional work that you may not want to do (though you can get a WordPress dev to do it for you).More Info/Download
Wpeddit (Reddit-like WordPress Theme)
Wpeddit is very similar to Reddit — to the extent that you’ll think you’re using Reddit when you view a site. Wpeddit also has most of the main functionality of Reddit, such as up and down voting, rankings, new/controversial/top widgets.
But Wpeddit goes beyond just that. It includes sub-Reddit like functionality, as well as user karma, notofications, and more.
Wpeddit does Reddit very well — perfectly in fact. It looks and feels exactly like Reddit, and has essentially all of the Reddit functionality you’ll ever need.
As soon as anyone looks at your site, they’ll think Reddit. Note, however, that there are some downsides to this, as you need to be aware of copyright and other issues.
Still, if you want to make a complete Reddit clone, this is the theme/plugin for you. You can do sub-Reddit like sections, and there are all of the Reddit-like algorithm functions.
What’s not so good
The biggest issue we noticed with Wpeddit was that some people seemed to have some trouble setting it up and getting everything running. Setting up a new theme and plugins — regardless of what they are — can be complicated. But that’s even more true when you have such an elaborate theme, which essentially changes the way WordPress works.
If you want to buy this theme, you may want to consider getting it installed by a WordPress developer, which only costs $5 and is well worth it for more complicated themes.More Info/Download
